None of what follows is a technical mountaineering route, and Gauteng was never going to give you Drakensberg scale exposure. But a good level of fitness is non negotiable here, some of these need a permit arranged well in advance, and more than one reviewer has admitted to underestimating the day. Take that seriously.
Castle Gorge
Distance 10km to 13.5km
Access permit required, book at least 3 days ahead
Highlights Piranha Pools and a waterfall
One of the most rewarding hard hikes within reach of Johannesburg, and one of the least forgiving of underpreparedness. The full route runs 10 to 13.5km, beginning at a secure parking area before turning into a steep climb up the mountainside. You'll need a permit from the Johannesburg Hiking Club, arranged at least three days in advance, and once you're in, it really is just you and the wilderness with no facilities to fall back on. The payoff is Piranha Pools, crystal clear natural rock pools, along with a waterfall worth the climb.
PRO TIP
This is not a venue with staff on standby. Tell someone your route and expected return time before you go, and carry more water than feels necessary.
Rustig, Karee Trail
Distance 13km circular, shortened to 9km via the chicken run
Elevation gain around 610m
Terrain loose stone, rocky sections
A full day hike that climbs right up to the top of the Magaliesberg, and one that Rustig itself will give you a cutoff time for, which tells you everything about the pace you'll need to keep. The rough, loose terrain slows progress more than the distance alone would suggest, so budget more time than the kilometres imply. There's a shortcut back at around the 6km mark if the day turns out longer than planned, and it's worth knowing it's there before you start rather than discovering it out of desperation.
Hennops Krokodilberg Route
Distance around 10km
Terrain technical, forest and river
Reputation the most rated difficult trail in Gauteng
This is the same reserve as the intermediate Hennops trails, but a different beast entirely. It's technical almost from the start, requiring patience, stamina, and genuine awareness of the terrain underfoot rather than a casual Sunday pace. It passes historical sites along the way, including an old field hospital from the Anglo Boer War and traces of old dolomite mining, which gives you something to think about on the sections where you're not entirely focused on your footing.
Suikerbosrand Multiday Network
Distance up to 66km across 1 to 6 days
Access permit required well in advance
Facilities six overnight huts, maximum 10 hikers per group
If you want to turn Gauteng hiking into an actual expedition rather than a long day trip, this is how you do it. The reserve's full trail network totals 66km, and can be tackled as anything from a single long day to a six day traverse using the six remote huts scattered through the reserve, each equipped with bunks, gas lamps, and a cooking area for up to ten hikers. Overnight permits need to be arranged well ahead with the reserve, and water needs to be rationed carefully between huts.
Vergenoeg, Black Trail
Elevation gain approximately 550m to 680m
Terrain stream bed scrambling, a roped section
Notable Cape vulture breeding colony, access restricted nearby
The Black Trail climbs a forested slope before the terrain turns genuinely tricky, up a stream bed and through a short section that requires a rope to manage safely. Push through it and you're rewarded with views over the cliffs and indigenous forest that make the Magaliesberg worth all this effort in the first place. The reserve protects an active Cape vulture breeding colony, so certain areas are off limits, and the descent has real potential for a skid on loose stone, so take your time on the way down even once the hard part feels behind you.
An advanced trail doesn't ask if you're ready. It just shows you, about two hours in, whether you were.
Respect the permits, respect the cutoff times, and never assume a trail rated difficult by people who hike regularly will feel easy just because it's technically still in Gauteng. Go with a group where you can, tell someone your plan, and carry more water than you think the day requires. The views have never once complained about being hard won.
